    The Effectiveness of Using Photograph Series to Increase Students' Skill of Writing a Report Text

    This research was a pre experimental research with one group pretest posttest design. The purpose of this research was to investigate the effectiveness of using photograph series to increase students' skill of writing a report text to Year-8 students of SMPN 12 Sungai Rasau Singkawang in Academic Years 2015/2016. There were 4 classes for the Year-8, each of which consisted of 22 to 23 students. The participants of this research were 22 students of Class 8C. The data were collected with the written test measure the students ‘achievement of writing report text. The data was collected by measurement technique. The result of mean score of the students in pretest before treatment was 55.9 and the students mean score of posttest after treatment was 71.13. The research finding shows it is effective to teach writing using photograph series

    Improving Students Reading Comprehension on Recount Text Through Think Pair Share Strategy(tps)

    The research is about improving ability on recount text through Think-Pair-Share to the Students of SMP Kemala Bhayangkari. The purpose of the study is to know how the TPS improves the Students ability in comprehending recount text. It is expected that the research would be useful for the teachers and students in language teaching and learning process. The method used in this research is a Classroom Action Research which consists of Planning, Acting Observing and Reflecting. This method is done in two cycles in order to get the maximum result of the research. The number of research participant is 25 students. The tools of collecting data are reading test, observation checklist and field notes. In Cycle 1, the students mean score was 62.6. and cycle 2, the mean score was 77.4. Based on the minimum standard of pass (KKM), 65, the second cycle has been successful

    Improving Students Motivation in Speaking by Using Agony Column Technique

    Most of eleventh grade students SMAKoperasi were less motivated in participating in English learning classroom activity, especially in speaking activity. Therefore, Agony Column technique was applied to improve students motivation in speaking in terms of students effort and persistence. This study was conducted by applying classroom action research on the 27 students of the eleventh grade of SMAKoperasiPontianak. The data were collected by using observational data and questionnaire. Based on the data revealed in observation, there were improvements in students motivation from the first and second cycle. Students motivation in first cycle score was 31% which was in the low motivation and became 52% in second cycle which was in the moderate motivation. Then, based on the data revealed in questionnaire, it was found that students responses in effort was 67%, in persistence was 68%, and their participating by Agony Column was 71%

    Using Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) in Teaching Reading Comprehension on Narrative Text to Man

    The purposes of conducting this research is to know whether or not Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) is effective in Teaching Reading Comprehension on Narrative Text and to know how effective is the use of Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) in Teaching Reading Comprehension on Narrative Text for the tenth grade students of MAN 1 Pontianak in academic year 2014/2015. This research was done by conducting a pre- experimental study which consists of pretest, posttest and two times of treatments. The sample of this research is class XA and the total of the students is 40. The data had been collected by measurements techniques. The tool of data collecting was objective test. The finding of the research showed that the mean score of students' pretest was 60.27 while the posttest was 78.25. The students' achievement was increased by the different score between pretest and posttest was 17.98. The t-test was higher than the t-table (5.5 >2.045 at α 5%). The result of the effect size (ES) was 0.87. It means that using Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) in teaching reading comprehension on narrative text for the tenth grade students of MAN 1 Pontianak is categorized as highly effective with the Effect Size (ES) > 0.8 (0.87 > 0.8)

    Using Role Play For Improving Students' Speaking Skills Into Relaying Telephone Messanges

    This research investigated how the students had improved their speaking skills when the role play technique was applied into the classroom through the scripted conversation of relaying the telephone messages. It was conducted in SMPN 18 Pontianak on the eighth grade students using classroom action research method. There were 32 students which was done into two cycles. The result of the research proved that using role play could improve the students' speaking skills especially in relaying telephone messages. In cycle 1, the students showed their issues in speaking. They made mistakes particularly on pronunciation for example the words of “could”, “right”, “message” etc as well as vocabulary and expression aspects. The class was noisy and some were active talking but some were less paid attention. The students did not fulfill KKM on cycle 1, it was only 48,2. Therefore, the writer would conduct cycle 2 to make the students get improved on speaking. In cycle 2, the writer was assisted by her collaborator to provide the student the simulation or sample conversation sheets. It was intended to make the students would memorize easily since the information on the blank sheet as accordance with their own information. Result of it that there was effective and worked successful. The students finally reached mean score of 66,9. Moreover, their issues about pronunciation, vocabulary and expression could be solved as well

    The Trend Analysis on the Research Methods and Techniques Used in Research on Speaking

    This research aimed to identify the method of research and teaching technique used and the educational levels preferred in students' thesis on speaking. Thisresearch used descriptive method. The subjects of research were 40 theses on speaking by students of English Education Study Program during the period of 2009-2012.The research data were taken from UPT Perpustakaan Tanjungpura University. The result of the study showed that based on the method of research used, Classroom Action Research was 65% or it was the most frequently used. Pre Experimental was 20% and Descriptive Study was 12.5%. Based on the teaching techniques used, Role Play was dominated about 22.5%, Chain Pictures was 10%, Songs andDrama were 5% in each. Based on the educational level researchers preferred; Junior High was 40%, Senior High was 40%, University was 7.5%, Course was 7.5% and Elementary level was 5%

    This research answers the problem that is, the use of directed reading thinking activity strategy improves students\u27 reading comprehension on narrative text of the eighth grade of SMP N 2 Pontianak. This study was conducted to answer the following problems:How does directed reading-thinking activity improve students\u27 reading comprehension in the orientation, complication and resolution in narrative text?In this research, direct reading thinking strategy is reading strategy in which focused on developing the students reading comprehension in finding out the main idea and the detailed information and understanding the reference, inference and the new or unknown vocabularies of narrative text. This study used classroom action research method. The tools of data collection used observation checklist, and field note. On the first, second and the third cycle the writer used picture and text as helping strategy. From the result of measurement test, the data showed that the students\u27 mean score had improvement from the first cycle to the third cycle. The research results showed that students\u27 reading comprehension on narrative text improved after being taught by Directed Reading-Thinking Activity Strategy

    Teaching Speaking By Using Snake And Ladder Game

    The purpose of this research is to find out the effectiveness, the strengths, and the weaknesses of the snake and ladder game in teaching speaking to the seventh grade students of SMPN 4 Ketapang in academic year 2013/2014. This research was conducted as a pre experimental research with the one group pretest-posttest. The sample of this research were class VII C which consists of 24 students. The data were collected through pretest and posttest of students\u27 speaking performance and were analyzed by using Effect Size (ES) formula. The result of mean score of the students in pretest before treatment is 51.33 and the students mean score of posttest after treatment is 74.53. The finding shows that the effect of treatment is 1.49 (>1.00) or categorized as strong effect. It indicates that the use of snake and ladder game is effective in teaching speaking

    Improving Students Reading Comprehension on Narrative Text Through Wh-questions

    This research was conducted based on the problems which were found in the process of teaching-learning reading comprehension on narrative text by the ninth grade class A students of SMP Negeri 3 Mukok. The problems were that they were could not find main ideas of a paragraph and made summary of an entire text. The research was guided by a conceptual framework leading to the using WH-questions to improve their comprehension on narrative text. The research type was an Action Research. The subject consisted of 24 Students of the Ninth Grade Class A of SMPN 3 Mukok in Academic Year 2012-2013. The research data were collected using test (test after first treatment and test after the second treatment), observation for collecting data on students motivation in comprehending the reading text especially in reading comprehension on narrative text through WH-Question. The data of this research were taken from the students score in two cycles and they were collected by using students worksheet, observation checklist table, and field note. The mean score increased from 57.50 to 73.75. It concluded that teaching narrative text through WH-Questions could improve students reading comprehension

    The use of cloze procedure to test the students reading comprehension. The purpose of this research is to know the effectiveness of the use of cloze procedure to test reading comprehension of the eleventh grade students of SMUN 1 Sungai Ambawang in academic year 2012/2013. The method of this research was a Pre-experimental Study and the technique of data collecting was matching test. The research findings showed the total score of pretest is 2735 with the mean score 68.375 and categorized Average. Furthermore, the result of posttest is 3155 with the mean score 78.875 and categorized Good. The result of computation on the t-test with 7.56 is higher than the t-table for the degree of freedom N-1 (40-1) = 39 is 2.042. Moreover, the computation on Effect Size of the treatment is 1.13. It is categorized Highly Effective because the result of 1.13 is higher than 0.8 that is the high level of effectiveness on Effect Size criteria proposed by Burn (ES > 0.8 = 1.13 >0.8). From the computation, it can be concluded that the teaching reading comprehension by using Cloze Procedure is highly effective
